The wounded city greets another day of life. Fog from the surrounding mountains hangs over the Miljacka valley. The Eternal Flame in Titova Street burns with its usual glow. Morning crowds, glad still to be alive, go almost carelessly about their daily duties. In the general melancholy and depression, people desperately search for the meaning of life. After everything that has happened here, to celebrate life and humanity seems vain.
But, luckily, not everyone takes that view.

 In a ceremony held in Sarajevo on February 23, NGO Gariwo awarded the Dusko Kondor Civil Courage Award for 2010 to six brave individuals who risked their own lives by standing up to negative authorities and acting according to their own values. The award commemorates an uncompromising champion of civil courage, who was assassinated in his own home in Bijeljina on the 22nd of February 2007 and whose name has become a symbol of civil courage.
Based on the received proposals, the Commission for The Dusko Kondor Awards for Civil Courage and Affirmation of Civil Courage agreed to grant the Awards for 2010 to:
- Krstan Bijeljac for civil courage
- Esad Alic (posthumously) for civil courage
- Slobodan Pejovic for civil courage
- Srdjan Aleksic (posthumously) for civil courage
- Miomir Mile Plakalovic for civil courage
- Amela Dudic for affirmation of civil courage
On behalf of NGO Gariwo, Svetlana Broz took the opportunity to thank all the integral people and institutions that were responsible for the succesful realisation of the event, particularly the Royal Norwegian Embassy and the city of Sarajevo for sponsoring this event (read speech here).
In their speeches, H.E. Jan Braathu Ambassador of Kingdom of Norway (read speech here) , Mr. Uwe Kitzinger, CBE, Chairman of the Gariwo International Board, Founding President of Templeton College, Oxford (read speech here), Mr. Miroslav Zivanovic, Deputy Mayor of Sarajevo gave their support and emphasized the importance of having such awards (read speech here).
The ceremony was attended by numerous members of the diplomatic corp, including H.E. Ms. Maryse Berniau, Ambassador of the Republic of France in B&H, H.E. Mr. Zulkifli Adnan, Ambassador of Malaysia, H.E. Mr. Ahmed El Sayed Khattab, Ambassador of Arab Republic of Egypt, Mr. Predrag Arsovic, Deputy Ambassador of Monte Negro, Mr. Edvard Kopusar, Deputy Ambassador of Slovenia; by many esteemed religious representatives and distinguish professors and journalists from Monte Negro and Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as politicians and NGO sector representatives and high school and university students from Zenica and Sarajevo.

  On Wednesday 10.02.2010 a session of Meeting of students with Ambassador of Kingdom of Spain H.E. Alejandro Enrique Alvargonzalez San Martin was held in offices of NGO Gariwo and Foundation Imam petlju on the topic "Bosnia and Herzegovina in EU - a near future?". Ambassador spoke about the conditions and obstacles of Bosnia and Herzegovina in process of EU accession and compared that process with that of Spain in the 80s and offered a few recommendations in discussion with students. |

F ormal Policy Working Group for the development and promotion of the Law on Volunteerism in FBiH was established in March of 2009. UNV presides over the group made up of representatives of government and international organizations (OSCE BIH, OKC Banja Luka, CPCD Sarajevo, Sumero Sarajevo, KULT Sarajevo, Osmijeh Gradacac and others). The group has also gathered more than 50 letters of support from NGOs and other initiatives in the country and the draft of Law on Volunteering was presented to the Federal Commission for Coordination of Youth Issues in November of 2009. Our goal is for it to enter parliamentary procedure in the following two months and the Law to be adopted by the summer of 2010. Enclosed is the draft of the Law (in B/H/S) .   On January 21, 2010, NGO Gariwo and Foundation Imam petlju Gariwo held a Round Table Volunteerism, yesterday, today, tomorrow. Participants of the round table were addressed by the Ambassador of Sweden in Bosnia and Herzegovina, H.E. Bosse Hedberg and the Ambassador of Malaysia in Bosnia and Herzegovina, H .E. Zulkifli Adnan who spoke about the experience of their countries in the field of volunteerism. As a volunteer member of many NGO's, Mr. Bahrudin Fazlic gave an overview of volunteerism situation till today, as well as as recommendations for further development of volunteerism movement in B&H. Executive Director of YYC Banja Luka, Mr. Jugoslav Jevdjic explained the main provisions of RS Volunteerism Law, as well as how this law should affect the organized work with volunteers. On behalf of Scouts "Bosnia 96", Ms. Edina Fazlic addressed the fact that volunteerism should begin to be developed in primary schools in B&H, while Ms. Dunja Fazlic from Scouts Union of Canton of Sarajevo shared her experience about what it means to be a volunteer. Moreover, Ms. Sadeta Skaljic and Mr. Vildan Hadzihasanovic from B&H Ministry of Justice, Sector for cooperation with NGOs and development of civil society additionally addressed the participants and informed them about the current process of development of Volunteerism Law on state level and about the next steps; while Dr. Semir Osmanagic presented the international volunteer work action "MRAV Bosanske piramide" which is planned for the summer of 2010. Round table was attended by over 50 participants, representatives of international organizations, state ministries and civil society organizations. |
